A NATO air strike in Afghanistan's central Uruzgan province on Sunday accidentally killed dozens of Afghan civilians and injured many more, officials announced Monday morning. "As a result of the air strike, according to initial information, 21 civilians were killed, including women and children, and another 14 were injured," Zemarai Bashary, a spokesman for Afghanistan's interior ministry, confirmed for AFP. (The number of dead has since been changed to 33.) The civilians were hurt and killed when weapons hit three vehicles that military officials believed to be full of insurgents en route to an attack in the nearby Helmand province. "We are extremely saddened by the tragic loss of innocent lives," General Stanley McChrystal, the NATO and U.S. commander in Afghanistan, said in a statement, according to the BBC. "I have made it clear to our forces that we are here to protect the Afghan people, and inadvertently killing or injuring civilians undermines their trust and confidence in our mission." A full investigation is underway
